很多看了《大鱼海棠》电影的朋友们觉得这个电影中心思想混乱，不清楚在说什么。

有人说是讲述少年椿和鲲之间的感情纠葛，有人猜测是通过湫为爱献身表达爱情的崇高。但是历时十二年打造的《大鱼海棠》真的只是为了说明这些吗？看完电影之后，觉得编剧是在下很大的一盘棋：讲的是灵婆寻找麻友的故事。

故事一开始讲述椿的成人礼，她在成人礼的时候化成海豚去人类世界，结果被渔网套牢，所幸被人类少年（后来被她取名叫鲲）所救，不幸的是鲲因为陷进漩涡死掉。
